Editorial—Unlucky Start

I’m sick.  It’s been coming on since yesterday, muscle pain and headache, that I was hoping was just a minor thing, but today it seems to have ramped up more than usual.  Still, we have some interesting stuff going on, so I wanted to make sure I got The Voice Magazine up today, at least on the web.  (The PDF may not be until the end of the weekend, so my apologies to you PDF readers out there.)

For instance, this week brings us the first of a new column, one that I’m fairly sure will bring us some good reads given the samples I’ve seen so far.

In addition, we’ve got the start of a multi-part series looking at the defund the police movement, with one student’s particular experience with the system and why that experience makes him think the movement might be missing the mark.

Of course, I can’t forget our feature article, an interview with a student like you.  This week, we interview a student who is undertaking a double major to become better situated to help people with developmental disabilities, in a way that goes beyond medication.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, AUSU is preparing for the by-election  in March to fill currently empty seats, we’ll have more information on that as it draws closer, but if you have an interest in helping other students—especially in the general sense—then you might want to keep an eye on the AUSU news section, as well as, of course, right here in The Voice Magazine for more information on what’s involved.

And behind the scenes here at the Voice, we’re also preparing the latest iteration of The Voice Magazine survey.  While we get a bit of feedback here and there with our Best Of editions and the occasional note from readers and interviewees, every once in a while we try to get a broader opinion.

As usual, the Voice Survey will come with some decent prizes.  These days, we’re not bothering to send out electronics, as, let’s be obvious, most people already have what they prefer to use.  So instead, we’re going to be doing some decent sized gift cards and other items that will hopefully be enticing even beyond the current Voice readership.  I’ll be honest, half the reason for the survey is just to get more people aware of the Voice and maybe even try their hands at writing, as we’re always on the lookout for more and new material, especially from current AU students, but even from graduates and others involved in the AU community. More details on both the survey and the prizing will be showing up over the next few weeks.  Let’s just say if you’re not subscribed to our mailing list, you may want to put up with the weekly email for a while just to make sure you don’t miss anything.

But this week, in addition to our features, we’ve got a decent selection of articles to peruse.  Whether it’s considering how much of mental illness is actually illness or simply rational reaction to modern society, or an article on how completion can go beyond the comfort zone, music reviews, recipes, scholarships, advice, events, and more.  All of it comes together this week to make this issue a pretty good read.  Now, I’m going to get some hot fluids, but please, enjoy the read!
