Finally, Calgary summers are reaching peak temperatures after the later start to summer this year. One of my favorite activities in the summer is hosting a BBQ in my yard. Throughout the years, I’ve hosted a number of these events and thought I’d share my wisdom in hosting the perfect summer BBQ with friends or family.
Choosing the ambience
Setting the scene: Even if you live in a smaller condo unit, setting the ambience for a summer BBQ is important. It will make guests feel cozy and welcome. Usually in the yard, I like to add some fairy lights, some comfortable padded chairs. I also make sure there’s plenty of shade where the guests will be sitting. Some games and activities such as poker or cards also make it enjoyable while the guests wait for a feast. On a smaller patio, you can add some patio furniture, some alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages for guests to enjoy while waiting.
Choosing the meats
I find this part tricky since everyone has their own preference for different cuts and types of meat. First, I make sure that everyone’s dietary restrictions are met. If they’re not able to consume pork for example, I make sure I have alternative cuts available. I love the classic chicken wings, steaks, juicy burgers, and skewered meats. Sometimes, if I’m feeling creative, I will add seafood such as oysters, clams, or fish to the mix.
Choosing the sides
After consuming a heavy amount of meat, many people prefer some sides to help cut the grease. For myself, I love a basic, chilled potato salad. Greek salads also work great with a tangy palate cleansing feel. I also add fruits such as watermelon or grilled veggies like mushrooms, zucchini, and corn on the cob for a diverse taste profile.
Choosing the drinks
No BBQ is complete without some chilled drinks. Especially if you’re spending longer periods of time in the yard socializing. A chilled beer and fruitier punches, or iced tea make for a great BBQ. Hydration is important so make sure there’s enough drinks to keep your guests entertained and healthy.
Choosing the desserts
My last BBQ I learned that some fruits grilled actually make a delicious dessert. For example, pineapple, when grilled, brings out its caramelized sweetness and a smoky flavor that compliments grilled chicken or pork very well. Grilled peaches are another classic that can be paired with ice cream and honey for an elegant dessert. I like grilling these until the grill marks appear and the fruit is oozing with juicy goodness.
I always find that summer BBQs are one of the fondest memories I have with my family and friends. Sometimes, we even take the BBQs out to a park or national park which makes the experience even more exciting. This usually involves a lot of packing and preparation, however the view in front of a lake or mountain is unbeatable.
