Recently I had the chance to eat my way through Richmond, Vancouver and it was one of the best foodie experiences I’ve had to date. Here’s everything I ate on this trip.
Tendon Kohaku: this is a chain that is based out of Japan and has locations in 6 countries. They specialize in tempura that is freshly made and like the quality found in Japan. Having visited Japan in 2019, I can safely say that the tempura was so crispy, delicate, and slightly savory with their house-special sauce. I got a combination of different vegetables, shrimp and seafood tempura which was complemented perfectly with a bowl of rice and sides of miso soup and simple cabbage salad.
Fish with You: This is a chain in BC that specializes in traditional sauerkraut fish. Before you think this sounds like a disgusting combination, think about fish stew with flavorful pickled greens and a blast of sour, spicy and savory. I absolutely love this dish on a cold, rainy day as it warms the whole body. The fish is usually bass or snake fish which has a tender texture when made into stew. The rice was complimentary and bottomless with this dish.
Costco sashimi: This was one of my top to-try list in Vancouver since it is not available anywhere else in Canada. It features a sushi bar with options of sashimi, sushi platters and poke bowels. Everything tasted so fresh in my sashimi platter, which featured ahi tuna, salmon, and scallop. This was much more affordable than sashimi at the restaurant and also was just as fresh. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn’t want to pay top dollar for sashimi but has sashimi cravings.
Grill Party: Grill party is a trendy, late-night eats and hangout place for young adults. The place is decked out in neon lights and has a fun, party-like atmosphere. They specialize in skewers and alcoholic beverages. I ordered a mix of lamb and beef skewers with authentic Mongolian-style seasoning. This was such a great after-dinner, snacking place that I decided to go back on the second day. The skewered meats were tender.
Chengdu Spicy restaurant: If you’re a fan of spice, this is a great option to try some authentic ChengDu “mala” or numbing-spice dishes. I absolutely loved the flavors that reminded me of food I had growing up. This is a specialty yam noodle salad that is spicy, hot but also cool and refreshing as the dish is served chilled. I also ordered their ChengDu stew which consists of your choice of meats. I chose the blood tofu, tripe, and lamb slices. They’re all coated in a delicious red chili oil and aromatic spices that can be smelled from even outside the restaurant.
Ying Ji Chang Feng: is a Hong Kong-ese restaurant that specializes in this item commonly found in dim sum called rice noodle rolls. The rolls have custom toppings including shrimp, pork, chives and mushrooms. They are a specialty brunch or dim sum item and goes great with a cup of Hong Kong milk tea.
