Artist: BUNT
Single: “You”
Hailing from Germany, BUNT has a unique style of DJ mixing that stands out from other jitter rave music. Known for the top streaming song “Clouds” from the most recently released album Levi Don’t Do It, BUNT has amassed recognition amongst the rave scene.
Most recently, BUNT released a new DJ single on November 18, 2024, titled “You” featuring Oaks vocals. Oaks is most known for working with many popular bands, namely the Chainsmokers and What So Not. “You” is an upbeat track with a quick and layered backtrack. Despite having a heavily mixed DJ composition, the song does not feel overly complicated or excessive. This track manages to hover between the lines of Low-Fi and Rave, making a unique crossover for listeners of what are typically two drastically different genres. This unique stylization and combination of musical categories allows for a much broader range of listeners to enjoy this track. The mixing of the song is very well done and creates a good balance between the vocals and the stuttering effect of the music, allowing for both elements to shine without drowning each other out. BUNT’s single also features a split-earphone isolation that can further a listener’s enjoyment and deepen their connection to the song’s pacing. This song also features a unique use of a vocal echoing effect which draws attention back to the lyrical and singing layer of the song.
Every good DJ recognizes the importance of a good beat drop and how important this element can be in producing a rave classic. BUNT does a great job of building up a listener’s anticipation before the drop to capture and maintain attention for the first minute or so of the song. This attention-grabbing aspect is unfortunately lost after this point. Repetition can be great on a dance floor, allowing ravers to dance and move to the beat without worrying about a sudden change in pace. This same repetition, however, can make it more difficult for a listener to casually stream or listen to this song. In this circumstance, the song is fairly repetitive, without having many variations in the song’s pacing or sound bites. In turn, it causes the song to become too monotone for an everyday listener. Toward the end of the song, the pacing seems to pick back up however it’s too little too late as the listener’s captive attention would already be lost.
Lyrically, the song flows nicely with an appropriately complementary rhythm. The premise of the song’s lyrics centers around the idea of feeling passionate, committed, and all-encompassing love. The lyrics of the song follow the same path as the mixed backtrack, they start strong, become very repetitive, then finish strong as well. The primary basis of the lyrics is the same phrase, “Whatever I do, I do it for you”, repeated countless times until the words almost feel like they start to lose their powerful meaning. Oaks’ singing in the song however is wonderful, a gentle and delicate voice beautifully contrasts the busy and loud tones of a jittery DJ song.
Despite these critiques, the song as a whole is fairly well produced and an enjoyable listen. It would fit in nicely with listeners’ rave party playlists or low-fi study music to have on in the background due to its unique ability to fall within both genres. Moreover, BUNT’s pop-up raves or concerts would be a fun experience for any party enjoyer. BUNT hosts frequent pop-up raves in many unique venues that add to the experience and ambiance. Most recently, one of these pop-up raves took place in a rented firehouse in New York. BUNT is also currently on tour having wrapped up an American tour and beginning a tour around Europe. The majority of these European tour dates are now sold out; however, it seems limited tickets to a few venues remain. Listeners can both RSVP for pop-up raves and purchase tour tickets through BUNT’s website. BUNT’s new single “You” and previous releases are currently streaming on most music platforms.
