Marie Well

I’m Marie Well, as in healthy well. At least, that’s my aim—to get well and make you well. We all have woes, from breakups to cancer to hoarder houses. I’m here to fix those woes—with tips mixed with my own tales.

Why read me? I’ve got a track record of fixin’ stuff. I’ve cured myself of anxiety. For a decade, I had anxiety attacks that struck almost daily. When not stricken, I’d write Voice articles, mostly on how to combat stress.

And then my world changed. One week went by with no attacks. A month. A year. Two years. And counting.

Now, I want to skyrocket our health—and bolster our creativity. After all, nothing soothes better than strokes of paint or tones of music or reps in a gym.

So, let’s get fit, creative, and well with Marie Well.

The Creative Spark! – Cover Up!

What makes books sell? The covers, partly. And what makes your essays nab great first impressions? The covers. We all know that presentations?not just cover pages?rank high when visual eye-candy gets served. We tend to love slideshows of optical illusions, but loathe screens stuffed with bullet points?especially when the speakers? words and the text don’t… Read more »

The Fit Student – Passion

I got demoted at work. Although I’ve been trying to keep workplace anxiety under control with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I didn’t need less stress; I needed better skills. You see, I took a risk and went underqualified into a marketing position. Yes, I soon got demoted, but I also received a potential offer to… Read more »

The Lonely Student

Are you isolated as an AU student? Worse yet, are you lonely? I mean shut-out-in-the-woods-with-no-running-water lonely. Once, we went camping to find a run-down, vacant house, lived in by a scruffy, bearded man who threatened to fetch his gun. He was lonely. Well, You’re not alone. The common view is that many AU students live… Read more »

The Fit Student – A Moment of Silence

What do your workplace conditions look like? I survived my first month of work after overcoming years of daily panic attacks. At first, I felt strong in the workplace. But, now, I feel frazzled. I work in a high-stress, scatterbrained environment. My boss’s negative personality trait is “uncooperative”; mine is “oversensitive”—not the best fit. Some… Read more »

The Fit Student – Work and Study Nerves

Has work stressed you to the point of quitting? At work, in the past two weeks, I’ve sobbed, cringed, laughed, and loved. In the past two weeks, I’ve worked in marketing, HR, design, and IT. In the past two weeks, my boss threatened to fire me. But I love it. Previously, career-preference-tests ranked marketing as… Read more »

The Creative Spark! – Fight for What Matters

Are you a saint at heart? Sadly, actors shouldn’t be saints. You see, when actors do saintly things, they need a motivation: a deep desire, usually selfish or competitive. Why? The silver screen aims for tension, hence the crazy emotions. As a student, you want to add competitiveness and selfishness (and love) to your essays…. Read more »

The Creative Spark! – Don’t Dismiss. Love!

Did you ever write a dull essay? I wrote dry essays?memorizing a PhD math proof on the first day of calculus seemed more thrilling. But what if you loved writing essays? Passionately? Loved reading them over and over like love letters from your lifelong crush? Well, you can find the love?like an actor. The best… Read more »

The Fit Student – Monkey Mind at Work and School

Did you ever fight a terrifying setback? I did. I reached the end of my work-life because of daily seven-hour panic attacks. After my work contract ended, I continued having those seven-hour panic attacks every three days. I trembled. I feared misplacing my wallet. I spaced out when someone spoke to me. And this happened… Read more »

The Creative Spark! – Talk Big

University is maddening. We’re taught to critically think, but not with our own thoughts. Researchers on a topic engage in what is called a “conversation.” Sure, you get to choose highlights of that conversation and synthesize a summary. But are syntheses original? Meh. You can take a strong position if you have lots of support… Read more »

The Fit Student – Managing Your Mind

Standing on the scale, I hit my target weight. Yet nothing feels different. I long to have that high?that feeling of exhilaration?that is supposed to happen when you skinny down. So, I aim for a lower weight?that is until I feel weak and lifeless, until I see a picture of a boney dying soul that… Read more »
