Xine Wang

Xine Wang hails from Edmonton, Alberta. But before settling in, she lived in Shanghai for the first 7 years of her life. That’s where she grew up and got her taste of the vibrant food culture. Since moving to Edmonton, she has fallen in love with international cuisine. If there’s a new restaurant in town, she would be the first to line up outside the door. At home, you can find her experimenting with recipes around the world. She hopes to share these experiences with all who care to listen.

In her spare time, Xin cares for 6 rescue budgies. Many of which she found stranded in parks or her backyard. On weekends, she drives out to Banff or Jasper where she can be found hiking new trails. She’s thankful Athabasca University has allowed her to work full-time as a researcher while taking courses that interest her such as abnormal psychology.

Five Types of Tacos and their Origins

Ever since returning from Mexico, I’ve been exploring Calgary for great taco joints across the city.  Although none quite compare with the street taco experience, I was able to find a few places that offered fairly authentic experiences for Mexican street food.  Paired with a fruity, tropical drink, tacos make the perfect finger food or… Read more »

Things You Can Make with a Home Meat Slicer

It’s been a while since I’ve done a kitchen gadget review.  Buying pre-sliced meats for my stir-fries can be expensive.  When I try to cut a whole beef shank or pepperoni by myself it becomes uneven.  The meat cooks unevenly and thus parts of the meat are undercooked and others become overcooked.  Now, imagine a… Read more »

Four Tips in Navigating the Canadian Medical System

I moved to Canada in 2001 as a child.  My parents came from Shanghai and immigrated here without fluent English-speaking skills.  Early on we realized there were a few differences between the Chinese health care system and the Canadian one.  Specifically, whereas in China we could see any specialist we would like without prior referral,… Read more »

Things We Did in Mexico!

I’ve been itching to write about travel for some time.  The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic put a pause on my travel bug, but with the reopening of international borders, I finally hopped on a flight to Mexico.  This was my first time in Mexico, and we stayed outside of the resort in Playa Del… Read more »

Mexican Street Food Favorites

I recently made a trip to Mexico to visit Tulum, Playa del Carmen and surrounding areas.  It was my first time in Mexico so all was fresh and memorable.  This trip was my first true trip after the COVID-19 pandemic.  Finally, I was able to enjoy local street foods the way I did pre-COVID.  Luckily,… Read more »

Problems with Being a People Pleaser

I’m guilty of being a people pleaser.  I spend a lot of time trying to please others.  Disappointing others was almost a crime in my books when I was younger. It’s a term used to refer to those with a strong urge to ensure satisfaction of people around them.  This might mean going out of… Read more »

Anti-aging Skin Hacks and What We’re Doing Wrong

The skin care industry is alive with many different products, treatments, and expenses.  It’s hard to navigate and understand what is relevant and what is not.  How do we find the right skin care regimen day in and day out.  Furthermore, what difference should I be noticing?  What are some things that are recommended and… Read more »

Busting the Myths of Using Sunscreen

Many people are becoming more aware of the damaging effects of sun on our skin.  It directly correlates to aging and skin conditions such as pigmentation, sunspots, and even skin cancers.  However, as a health care professional, I’ve heard so many myths and misunderstandings surrounding the topic.  Let’s talk about the myths of sunscreen and… Read more »

Five Winter Skincare Tips

I find that skincare in the winter becomes very hard especially living in a dryer climate such as that in Alberta.  Not to mention an uptick of eczema flare-ups and other irritated skin conditions that ensue with winter.  My partner has a case of keratosis pilaris where dry rough patches and tiny bumps can be… Read more »
